Where is Chestnut and why is it so great?

These are among the many questions I had when I found out I was going to be living at Chestnut Residence over a year ago. I was excited to be heading to University, to be living in downtown Toronto, and for the independence that would come from living on my own. But I also felt a lot of uncertainty about the changes going to university and living in residence would mean, and I had many questions about my transition into this new life. Luckily, Chestnut’s Facebook Group page connected me with lots of people who I was going to be living with the next year, and the newsletter, Chestnut Chatter, kept me informed and up-to-date with all the information I would need to know before moving in to residence.
Having lived at Chestnut for my first year, I can now say with certainty that my excitement was met with an amazing year of meeting new residence friends and learning a lot about myself and the world around me. So, where is Chestnut and why is it so great?
The neighbourhood is unbeatable! University life is as much about learning from textbooks as it is from learning from new experiences, and downtown Toronto truly has so many incredible things to do. With Chestnut right behind Nathan Phillip Square and minutes away from Dundas Square there were endless food festivals, cultural events and free concerts to attend during my study breaks. In the winter, ice skating at Nathan Phillip Square was a popular activity, and as the weather got warmer many students enjoyed walking around downtown Toronto, with many scenic parks, shops, and diverse restaurants.
Even without going outside there is plenty to do at Chestnut! I especially enjoyed the exercise gym and dance studio, where my friends and I would follow yoga videos together. Chestnut also has 5 music practice rooms, a 24-hour study space, and 2 student lounges. The student lounges are perfect for group projects or playing card games and relaxing with friends. A full laundry facility is conveniently located at the concourse level, making it easy to study or work-out even while your clothes are in the wash. Other great services at Chestnut are that housekeeping cleans the rooms and bathrooms once a week, and Chestnut security personnel ensure that only residents enter the building, meaning you have nothing to worry about (besides that quiz on Friday!). The newly renovated dining hall serves a delicious rotating menu, and IT staff are onsite to help with any problems or answer any questions. The food is truly the best on campus!
The number one reason I loved living at Chestnut is the people I was able to meet and the friendships I developed. Chestnut is home to students from various faculties and colleges, including Arts and Science, Engineering, Kinesiology & Physical Education, Architecture and others. Chestnut is also home to students from all over the world, and you may come home from the school year speaking another language or two! There are many clubs and activities at Chestnut, including many intramural teams. These activities, clubs and teams can help you meet your neighbours and feel even more proud to call Chestnut your residence, so I would definitely recommend getting involved when you can. I loved learning about other cultures and disciplines over my first year, and I am excited to continue the friendships I made during my year living at Chestnut.
