The Faculty-in-Residence (FiR) program is a unique opportunity for faculty members at the University of Toronto to live on campus and play a vital role in shaping the residential experience for students. By bridging academic and residential life, FiR foster community, support student success, and create meaningful connections beyond the classroom.
This distinctive role allows faculty to engage with students in informal settings, contribute to a vibrant living-learning environment, and make a lasting impact on campus culture.
We currently have two Faculty-in-Residence opportunities at Chestnut Residence and Oak House.
Our first position was established in 2018 at Chestnut Residence, where it has become a valued part of the student experience. We are now excited to expand the program with the addition of a second position at our newest residence, Oak House.
The FiR works collaboratively with Residence Life staff to organize memorable and educational events that prioritize connection between students living in residence and faculty. One of these recurring programs is Dinner With Your Prof where faculty members are invited to eat dinner with students in the residence Dining Commons.

Located at the corner of Spadina and Sussex, Oak House is our newest residence. Be the first occupant of this brand new, unfurnished 1000 square foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse.
Eligibility
Applicants must be tenure-stream or teaching-stream faculty members at the University of Toronto. Ideal candidates are those who believe in the value of a living-learning environment and are deeply committed to mentoring students, many of whom are navigating their first year of university life.
Commitment
FiR are expected to dedicate 5-10 hours per week to programming and outreach, much of which occurs during evenings and weekends.
Compensation
The faculty member is compensated with a monthly stipend of $2,400 per month from August to May. As a condition of living in residence, they will receive a discounted rate for a private 2-bedroom apartment or townhouse in residence, and will be required to pay on a monthly basis.
