2020-21 Meal PlansDietary NeedsMenusHoursEco2Go Winter Break Meal Plan

The meal plan for Chestnut residents is a declining balance meal plan. Your residence dollars are loaded onto your TCard at the beginning of the year, and, like a debit account, residence dollars in your meal plan account are deducted when you make food purchases. You’ll have the freedom to choose the meals you’d like to eat from a variety of locations across campus. Hello flexibility!

When you accept your residence offer, you’ll get to choose the meal plan that works best for your appetite, either STANDARD or LITE. The only difference between the plans are the amount of residence dollars included.

Although many of our past residents would argue that Chestnut serves up the best food on campus, you are not limited to purchasing your meals in the Chestnut Dining Hall. Both plans allow you to purchase food and beverage items from the Chestnut Dining HallNew College Dining Hall and select U of T Food Services retail outlets across campus.

Your residence dollars can be used as follows:

*Only items prepared by Food Services will be tax exempt. For example, a pre-packaged product such as a bag of chips would not be tax exempt, but a sandwich and beverage prepared on campus using raw ingredients would be tax exempt.

Balances can be topped up during the academic year by contacting the Residence Life Office; funds will take up to 24 hours to appear in your account. If you require a more immediate balance top up on your account, please visit the Food Services Administrative Office at: 229 College St, Suite 200. Funds can be added with immediate effect by using either a debit or credit card.

Balances will be automatically carried over for use in the summer and/or following academic term. Carryover is up to a maximum of 50% of the total Residence Dining Dollars or the remaining balance at end of academic year less a 10% administrative fee

Standard Plan: $5495 Residence Dining Dollars

Maximum Carryover allowed before 10% administration fee $2747.50.

$2472.75 Applied as Residence Carryover

Meal plans are mandatory for all Chestnut as there are no cooking facilities in the residence rooms. Accepting your residence offer is an automatic acceptance of the Meal Plan and an acceptance of all its terms and conditionsAll costs and fees associated with the meal plan are included in your residence fees.

If you have special dietary needs, including but not limited to those due to health or cultural practices, you are encouraged to review the Food Services Dietary Accommodations information in advance of your arrival (where possible).

Additionally, any student with a severe dietary allergen, intolerance, or restriction who is already living in residence is encouraged to fill out the form, Dietary Restrictions Due to Medical Conditions to provide the particulars of your specific needs by filling out their. Food Services will work with you to determine how those needs can be best accommodated.

Winter Break Closure

The Dining Hall is closed for the December holiday break beginning at 8:00 PM on Dec 22nd, 2020 until 7:00 AM on Monday, January 4th, 2021.

Should you require meals during this period, please see the Winter Break Meal Plan section for information on how to opt-in for the Winter Break Meal Plan. This service will only be available to those who have opted in for it as it not a part of the regular meal plan program.

Step 0: You should have received your first Eco2Go card with your room key. If not, retrieve your first Eco2Go card from your Chestnut staff member.
Step 1: Request your meal to be served in a re-usable Eco2Go container
Step 2: When you get to the cash register, present an Eco2Go card in exchange for an Eco2Go container. Please note: if you do not have the card, you will be charged $5.
Step 3: At your next visit, return your used, empty container to the cashier, and you will be given an Eco2Go card. Please try to empty the container- but no need to wash. We will wash and sanitize it for you!

You can return your used Eco2Go container at any time, even if you are not purchasing another meal. Simply return the container to the cashier, and you will receive this card in exchange to present next time you purchase a meal in an Eco2Go container.

Note: All cards will be sanitized after every use.

In previous years, the Dining Hall has remained CLOSED over the duration of the winter break. However, this year, given the uncertainty created by the pandemic and ongoing travel restrictions, the Food Services team has arranged for a Winter Break meal plan to accommodate students who choose to remain in residence throughout the 2020-21 Winter Break.

Students have the ability to opt-in to a Winter Break meal plan for the subsidized rate of $300. This will provide students 3 pre-boxed meals a day, starting with Breakfast on December 23rd, until breakfast on January 3rd. The $300 rate is a flat fee, there will be no pro-rating or adjustments available. This is opt-in only and not automatic. You can opt-in on the application when you apply. If you’ve already applied, you can log back in to your application to opt-in.

Proposed menus with information about dietary accommodations will be sent out to all students who opted for the meal plan the week of December 7. This will include details on meal type options (meat, vegan/vegetarian, etc.). You will not be able to opt-out of the meal plan once it commences but can opt-out of the meal plan before December 18 @ 4PM if your needs change before the Winter Break begins.

Meals will be able to be picked up in the dining hall. Breakfast will be served 8:00 AM -10:00 AM, lunch from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, and dinner from 5:00 -7:00 PM.

Alternatively, should you choose to not opt-in for the Winter Break plan, in addition to the many grocery stores and restaurants in the neighbourhood, if you are looking for other ways to have food/meals delivered, you may want to consider services such as UberEatsDoorDash or Instacart.
